Q. Would I need a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair? A. This depends on your ability to control with two hands or one; ideally you will have use of both hands/arms to safely control a mobility scooter and if not then the consideration should be made towards a powered wheelchair for safety as it uses a single handed joystick to control it.
Q. Will a powered wheelchair do the same distance and daily outings as a mobility scooter? A. Short answer is yes, the same distance and daily outings can be achieved with a powered wheelchair, depending on the model chosen
Q. Are mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs safe to use? A. Yes, as long as care is taken on kerbs, turning, crossing junctions/roads and rough ground/footpaths
Q. If I can’t drive a car, can I ride a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair? A. Yes, as long as you gain some instruction from the place of purchase and preferably read the instruction manual thoroughly; these machines all have electro magnetic braking as well as easy to use throttle controls; we recommend you speak with your doctor if you are unsure of any medical issues that might affect your handling of one of these products
Q. Can I ride my scooter/powerchair on the road or must I stay on the footpath? A. Mobility scooters come under the same classification as powered/electric wheelchairs and this means the users are subject to pedestrian legislation; therefore the use on footpaths or other pedestrian ‘rights of way’ are fine; if you have uncertainties contact our local authorities for clarification.
Q. Do I need to register my scooter/powerchair? A. QLD requires mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs to be registered (there is no charge for this); a small motorcycle size number plate is issued at the time or registering and then a registration sticker is sent to you in the post later; both items need affixing to the machine; to register the machine you will need QLD Transport forms plus a doctors letter noting you have a movement impairment and require a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair. Most dealers should be able to assist you with the forms required. For all other states contact your local authorities.
Q. Do I need insurance? A. It is recommended but not required; there are numerous insurance companies able to assist you; contact your home contents insurer or motoring organisation as they tend to have good annual rates for full comprehensive insurance.
Q. How far will my mobility scooter/powered wheelchair go on a single charge? A. this depends on a few factors – battery size (amp/hours), terrain, user weight, extra load carried (shopping etc); An average scooter/powerchair has about 25-30km range taking into consideration the previously mentioned factors; bigger batteries and easier terrain can increase this up to 45km; portable or mini machines will have a maximum distance of around 15-20km and are really designed for shopping centres and light workloads.
Q. How long do batteries last? A. This varies upon the user having a proper charging routine to suit the actual usage of the machine; the batteries should be charged after every days use and for about 8-10 hours to ensure a good charge has been achieved. Most battery manufacturers give a 6-12mth warranty on their product; basically they should last around 2yrs however this can vary. All the batteries used for these machines are maintenance free types. GEL batteries are recommended for mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs.
Q. Can I over charge my batteries? A. No, the chargers automatically turn off when full charge has been reached and then trickle charge when required; it is best to keep the batteries fully charged and if the machine is not in use then a weekly charge of 8-10 hours is recommended to maintain battery performance.
Q. When should I service my scooter/powerchair? A. It is recommended by all manufacturers that an annual service is completed; if the machine is getting used 3-4 times per week then a 6 monthly service is recommended. Servicing takes around one hour to complete.
Q. What happens if I breakdown or get a puncture when I’m out? A. Most road service organisations (e.g. - RACQ) have a free roadside priority service to users of mobility scooters/powerchairs; ensure you have their number with you just in case and call them to verify that this service is still available; your dealer should also be able to offer some assistance, Mobility And You does offer free roadside assistance to it’s customers.
Q. Will my mobility scooter/powerchair go up steep hills & slopes? A. Most machines will travel up a 12% slope with an average user weight of 80kgs; if in doubt find an alternative route which is not so steep; refer to your manufacturer’s manual for verification on your exact machine;. Compact/mini machines will not cope with steep slopes at all.
Q. Can I get finance to pay the scooter/powerchair off? A. Yes. We can help you with 'No Interest Ever' repayment plans, either 6/12/18 or 24 months, some conditions apply.
